EASST iMpacts
Since its conception in 2011, EASST has taken great strides in the direction of promoting rigorous program evaluations to improve the effectiveness of development policies in the region. 5 EASST impact evaluation summits have been attended by over 15 partners and more than 325 participants. Through 6 fellowship competitions, EASST has granted 20 fellowships from a pool of over 540 applicants. EASST’s Research Grant Competitions have garnered 64 original design ideas and led to the submission of 30 full proposals, of which 14 were funded. See below for a compilation of EASST’s achievements in numbers:
Fellow Experiences
"I feel quite privileged as an EASST fellow as it is more than just a fellowship for me personally. EASST allowed me to see and appreciate how evidence-based social science research is quite critical in nations with limited budget like Ethiopia. Through the impact evaluation course and faculty mentorship, it completely changed the way I do research as an economist––which is directly evident in a number of research I have produced ever since and working on currently. Through EASST, not only have I acquired the key skills to actually make a real difference in development policy analysis, but also have got access to a world-class network of leaders in the field."

"I am an epidemiologist and I had never considered the role of Economics in public health until I learned about Development Economics through EASST. This knowledge has made me understand and better appreciate public health problems and how they impact development in resource-limited settings. My research focus has now changed from mere public health concerns to how they impact development among the poor."
- Jayne Tusiime
"The EASST program has skilled me in techniques for impact evaluation. It has extraordinarily widened my network with very prominent as well as upcoming researchers in the USA and Africa. I am more empowered in looking at research as a device for solving real life problems and not otherwise. I now have a place where I can compare my thoughts and capacities with what is contemporary knowledge. Exposure to the EASST program has incentivized my earlier dream of teaching and research, and have confidently helped me transition from our national examinations board back into academia at Makerere University."
